College of Architecture, Art, and Planning (AAP), Cornell University

Call for Applications: Strauch Early Career Fellows in Art

The College of Architecture, Art, and Planning (AAP) at Cornell University announces a position for an emerging scholar or practitioner with a keen interest in an academic career in Art. The Strauch Fellowship is a year-long fellowship with a nine-month teaching responsibility, full-time position in the department relevant to the Fellow's field and discipline of art and will be in located in Ithaca, New York. The fellowship is are part of AAP's Broadening Participation Program, which aims to invest in early career scholars/practitioners for the purpose of developing robust pathways for diverse and impactful faculty in our disciplines. We invite applications from outstanding graduates with terminal degrees in this field, pre-tenure track faculty, lecturers, or teaching faculty who are engaged in advancing inclusion, equity, and justice in their disciplines.

The Department of Art, at the College of Architecture, Art, and Planning, offers a B.F.A., an M.F.A. in Creative Visual Arts, and an M.F.A. in Image Text. The department enjoys a close relationship with diverse academic units across the university including in the humanities, sciences, and technology. Art faculty and students have access to extensive traditional and digital production facilities in the college as well as to the resources of a major research university. The department also offers a semester-long undergraduate studio program in Rome, Italy.

The Strauch Early Career Fellow in the Department of Art is expected to have an MFA in Art. They will engage in creative practice, develop and teach one course and a workshop in their area of expertise each semester, deliver a public lecture, and plan an exhibition or public project of work made during the time of the fellowship. Responsibilities include engaging in creative practice in an off campus studio provided by the College. In addition, there will be the opportunity to participate and be mentored in related departmental service such as admissions and portfolio review, and curriculum development.

Applicants should have a deep knowledge of their media, but also a demonstrated familiarity with the broad range of current practices, and must be able to teach from a knowledge of art history and theory. Cornell AAP ' s B.F.A. and M.F.A. are both oriented toward the interrelationship and integration of interdisciplinary studio practice with content from across the university: the candidate should therefore be able to address art practice in a broad cultural, socio/political, technical, and conceptual context within an atmosphere of close faculty/student involvement and mentoring.

The candidate will advance their own creative practice even as they work with us to take the larger project of expanding imaginaries for social change forwards in a way that will support the department ' s goal of preparing students for art making in an increasingly diverse and inclusive world. We seek candidates with a strong interest in teaching and academic life, an active exhibition record or other modes of public artistic engagement. Because individual faculty and student practices regularly lie beyond or across these traditional categories, we encourage applications from the full range of media, practice, and background/orientation. Thus, this search is not medium specific but we will prioritize practices that can be supported by our existing college facilities.

Salary will be $65,000 and a stipend for research-related expenses is provided separately.
