Job Description

Basic Position Objective Statement:

The Safety Manager will be responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing safety programs to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations, enabled by collaboration with associates at all levels to establish and maintain a culture of safety.

  Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop, implement, regularly review and update comprehensive safety programs that achieve accident prevention, ensure associates are protected, and ensure compliance with relevant regulations and industry standards.
  • Work closely with department leaders to foster an environment that incorporates safety practices in daily operations.
  • Partner with department leaders to conduct investigations into workplace incidents and accidents, identifying root causes and implementing preventive measures.
  • Collaborate with external agencies and consultants as needed to ensure compliance and best practices.
  • Facilitate and drive change through safety lead team meetings and actions.
  • Lead and direct the activities of the Safety Advocate.
  • Lead the capital planning process for safety related projects.
  • Leverage data systems to identify opportunities for enhancement and develop improvement plans. Compile, analyze, interpret and present safety metrics.
  • Conduct regular inspections and site audits to ensure adherence to safety regulations and standards. Provide recommendations for improvement.
  • Design and conduct safety training programs to ensure associates at all levels are well-informed about safety protocols and practices to reduce accidents and injuries.
  • Conduct drills and exercises to ensure associates are prepared for emergency situations.
  • Administer the outside contractor safety policy and support project managers to ensure contractors are compliant with policies.
  • Partner with Human Resources to manage the workers compensation process, serving as a liaison between associates and our 3 rd party provider

  • Lead a culture of continuous improvement in safety that reduces facility risk as measured by leading metrics
  • Drive associate engagement through structured processes that create associate opportunities:
    • Foster an environment that recognizes the importance of safety in daily practices.
    • Support associate led engagement in safety systems and hazard elimination projects.
  • Manage a safety capital process that prioritizes risk reduction and associate well being
  • Develop mill leaders that approach challenges through a learning lens fostering collaboration and problem solving
  • Lead facility teams that address top ergonomic, guarding, and industrial vehicle challenges
  • Ensure regulatory compliance:
    • Mill wide regulatory compliance with applicable local, state and federal safety laws verified through associate training and facility audits.
  • Drive change through servant leadership:
    • Educate the team on safety best practices and influence behavior through visibility on the operating floor.

  Education, Certifications, and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in occupational health & safety, environmental science, or related field.
  • 5+ years of direct safety management experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Certification in safety management is a plus.

  Key Competencies:

  • Proven experience as a Safety Manager in a continuous operation manufacturing environment
  • Knowledge of compliance requirements of OSHA, state, federal and global safety regulations required
  • Demonstrated success in practical and impactful safety training
  • Ability to effectively lead diverse individuals and groups through influence
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills with all levels of the organization
  • Ability to work additional hours during the week or on weekends, nights and holidays as required
  • Organize priorities to mitigate exposure and risk

  Physical Requirements:

The ability to work in a manufacturing environment to include:  sitting, standing, or walking for long periods of time; climbing stairs; operating office equipment; and wearing required personal protection gear (i.e. hearing, eye and foot protection).
