The University of Miami/UHealth Department of SCCC has an exciting opportunity for a Full Time Phlebotomist 2 to work at the UHealth Lennar Medical Center in Miami, Florida

CORE JOB SUMMARY                                                                                                                                

The Phlebotomist 2 draws and collects blood samples from patients, verifies records, and prepares specimens for laboratory analysis. An employee in this position processes and collects protocol blood samples. The Phlebotomist 2 relates to and interacts well with patients by taking into consideration their age-specific, physical, and psychosocial needs. The incumbent also uses the laboratory and hospital systems to access data and perform other appropriate system functions.

CORE JOB FUNCTIONS                                                                                            

  • Performs patient phlebotomy by prescribed technique outlined in the phlebotomy procedure manual.
  • Processes oncology patients as priority. Works on pre-accession specimens and matches and organizes orders and labels for the day.
  • Follows patient identification process.
  • Answers questions and resolves problems pertaining to test requisitions, specimen requirements, test additions, priority changes, and patient results.
  • Maintains adequate inventory levels of medical as per protocol and rotates previous stock.
  • Maintains required files and log systems in a neat and accurate manner. Assists supervisor in recording statistics and generates reports.
  • Review with Clinical Research Coordinators from all Site Disease Groups of processed cancellations, credits, and additions of test procedures.
  • Picks up, unpacks, dates and stores in a timely manner according to manufacturers’ recommendation.
  • Checks packing slips, verifies number of items received, documents, and gives copy to supervisor/designee.
  • Removes, empty boxes and recyclable material and disposes of them as per Standard Operating Procedures. Prepares biohazard containers for use and then disposal.
  • Assures accuracy and completeness throughout the patient registration process. Follows up with Clinical Research Coordinators to request missing information or to clarify test orders appropriately and in a timely manner.
  • Assists in the maintenance of hardware by changing paper, labels, and/or printer ribbons when necessary.
  • Works side by side with LabCorp staff, BSSR, Pathology, IR and applicable ancillary units.
  • Ability to be flexible and cross-cover various sites as needed for operational needs.
  • Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS                                                                                                         

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Certification in relevant specialty or field
  • Minimum 2 years of relevant experience

Department Specific Functions

This position is a full-time position in the SCCC Research Lab at the University of Miami. 

Research Protocol Specific Functions:  

  • Review orders for sample processing and compare to research lab manual and protocol.
  • Process samples as required by the lab manual and protocol.
  • Prepare samples for short-term or long-term storage.
  • Prepare samples for shipping to sponsor.
  • Scan and uploads documentation into required formats after completion of sample shipment.
  • Contacts shipping companies (Fedex, UPS and others for pickup as needed).
  • Reviews daily patient schedule to triage workload as needed.
  • Participate or conduct research protocol lab manual training for new studies.
  • Sit in Site Initiation Visits with study team and relay information to Lab team members.
  • Update freezer logs for batch shipping.
  • Update freezer temperature logs.
  • Assist in the development of lab policy & procedure.
  • Participate in lab staff meetings and provide updates on specific projects.
  • Log in and out samples for drop off and pick-up.
  • Maintain research related certifications.
  • Provide answers to sponsor queries.
  • Provide documentation or answers to CRC staff and management.
  • Produce reports as requested by supervisor or Lab Director.
  • Assist in the on-boarding of new employees.

Laboratory Activities  

  • Keeps lab clean, neat and organized. Performs housekeeping duties to remove clutter. Removes empty boxes and recyclable material and disposes of them as per Standard Operating Procedures. 
  • Prepares biohazard containers for use and then disposal.
  • Assists in the maintenance of hardware by changing paper, labels, and/or printer ribbons when necessary.
  • Contact Biomedical department if equipment needs service.
  • Provide Cross Coverage as needed for operational needs across all sites to include, Northern and Southern network sites, UHealth Tower and Main UMHC.
  • Provides support to all areas when specimen transport/computer systems are down as per protocol. A dheres to all UMHC Administration, Environmental of Care, CHP, Safety, Infection Control and Laboratory policies and procedures.
  • Respects the rights, privacy and property of others at all times including the confidentiality of information, according to Administrative Policies, the Privacy Act of 1974 and applicable laws and regulations.
  • Participates in the Performance Improvement of the department.  PI also includes documentation of all problems, complaints for QA/PI analysis and/or to the Supervisor.
  • Participates in continuing Performance Improvement to ensure continuous improvement of services provided. 
  • Attends appropriate orientation and training courses to maintain competency in job skills and knowledge. 
  • Participates in required educational program, including HIS, safety, infection control, etc.
  • Follows hospital-wide and unit specific safety and infection control standards. Work on projects assigned by Supervisor/Manager/Director.
