JOB SUMMARY:
Under general supervision, direction, or on an assigned shift: coordinates and oversees resident utilization of garden plots; maintains Garden Center, lawn bowling equipment and facilities, and recreation facilities, as needed; and performs related work as required. Work involves continuing contact with residents using the Garden Center and lawn bowling facilities.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Assists and advises residents assigned gardening plots regarding types of plantings, seasonal variations, soil conditioning, pest and insect control, watering and other matters as requested; advises residents of GRF policies and monitors compliance.
Maintains all common areas of the garden centers, the lawn bowling greens and recreation facilities, as necessary, using company standard guidelines.
Maintains inventory of tools and other needed supplies. Provides supervisor requests for additional needs and arranges for purchase of those approved items. Keep records of project/repair tickets and provides completion reports to supervisor. Coordinate the rental of open garden plots with Garden Center Recreation Leader. Monitor plots for compliance with the operating rules and communicate problem plots as well as plots that have been improved.
Controls weeds and unwanted plant material. Applies poisons for rodent control and other animal pests subject to state and federal law. Performs minor plumbing repairs and installation of water systems in and around the garden center (including but not limited to repair of leaky faucets, broken pvc lines, resetting controllers and investigating and/or reporting and resolving underground leaks).
Regular attendance required. All duties performed on-site for the Community.

EQUIPMENT OPERATED:
Truck, utility vehicle, gardening tools, rototiller, Bobtail tractor, skid-steer, spray rig, spreaders, hand tank sprayers, shovels, traps, cages and telephone.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee will be exposed to dust, dirt, fumes and normal outdoor elements.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
Graduation from high school including or supplemented by courses in horticulture and considerable experience in gardening or any equivalent combination of education and experience which produces the following:
· Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the job.
· Knowledge of soil conditions, types and seasons for garden plantings in Southern California.
· Knowledge of the principles and practices of garden weed and pest control.
· Knowledge of the work hazards and applicable safety precautions associated with assigned equipment and operations; including rototiller and tractor.
· Ability to understand and relate to the needs and concerns of senior citizens.
· Ability to perform manual work requiring physical strength and stamina appropriate to the area of assignment.
· Ability to read and write work-related job instructions in English.
· Ability to communicate effectively with others in English.
· Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, departments and the public.
· Skill in the use and care of tools and equipment appropriate to the nature of assignment.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Possession of a valid California Driver’s License.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to talk, hear, see, and to use hands to finger, grasp, kneel, pull, push, stoop, balance, climb, crouch, and lift up to 50 lbs. The employee is regularly required to walk for periods of up to 6 hours. The employee is occasionally required to carry, kneel, pull, push, and stoop.
MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:
While performing the duties of this job the employee reads, solves problems, uses his verbal & written communication skills and is able to handle frequent customer contact.
