Job Description

Food Safety and Quality Assurance Partner UNFI Canada is seeking a Food Safety and Quality Assurance Partner. This role supports maintaining a world-class food safety culture and ensuring compliance with food safety, sanitation, and pest control programs at the location. The FSQA Partner collaborates with Distribution Center leadership to ensure policies, procedures, audits, and training programs are understood and followed, including support of regulatory certifications. Responsibilities Coordinate food safety, sanitation, and pest control compliance efforts as required Ensure regulatory standards are met by third-party sanitation and pest elimination providers through occasional joint surveys/visits Conduct food safety assessments at internal Distribution Center locations and third-party locations as needed Ensure compliance with third-party certifications Review findings with Distribution Center leadership and ensure corrective action plans are detailed and completed with leadership support to improve food safety culture Stay current with all state, federal, and local regulatory requirements to ensure compliance for Distribution Center operations and SQF standards Use available metrics and reporting systems to track and measure food safety performance, identify exceptions, and collaborate with leadership to address opportunities Manage SQF, GDP, and food safety programs, including document review of records, associate training, and oversight of corrective actions Direct activities to maintain and execute effective food safety, food defense, and recall plans, policies, and processes in Distribution Center operations Provide food safety training and support to operations and internal/external partners Collaborate with operations partners to ensure compliance during facility changes and/or new site developments Investigate product quality and compliance issues (e.g., tampering, adulteration, mislabeling) Maintain active working relationships with appropriate industry and regulatory bodies Promote innovation in food safety messaging and culture, emphasizing that food safety is everyone’s top priority Perform other relevant duties as required Education / Certification Associate degree in Biology, Food Science, Public Health, Environmental Science or related field required HACCP, Preventive Controls Qualified Individual, and/or SQF Practitioner certifications highly desired Experience 3+ years of experience in related food fields Experience interpreting state and federal regulations and maintaining relationships with industry and regulatory officials Ability to coordinate planning and collaboration with other business functions to drive continuous improvement Ability to analyze and resolve difficult situations with timely decision making Knowledge Familiarity with FDA Food Code, Food Safety Modernization Act and Seafood HACCP requirements Familiarity with GFSI schemes Working knowledge of OSHA is beneficial Skills / Abilities Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; ability to influence at all levels and work with unions Ability to balance multiple priorities and communicate issues clearly to stakeholders Strong analytical skills for data interpretation and analysis Proficient with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel Ability to train and interface with a wide variety of personnel Leadership ability to inspire others to achieve results Flexible and adaptable to learn new technologies; comfortable with change Limited travel may be required Good judgment in situations with limited direct supervision UNFI is an Equal Opportunity employer committed to creating an inclusive and respectful environment for all.
