Position Overview

The Division of Mental Health is seeking to hire a Carpenter for the Chester Mental Health Center located in Chester, Illinois to receive day to day guidance from the Chief Stationary Engineer performing skilled carpentry work in the construction, maintenance, repair, or alteration. Performs cabinet work. Works in the carpenter shop. Lifts supplies/materials weighing up to 75 pounds independently and up to 100 pounds with assistance. Exercises appropriate safety precautions in the use and handling of tools and equipment, paying particular attention to these procedures when working on residential and programming/training areas. Adheres to applicable Public Health, Public Aid, Health Care Financing Administration (HCFA), and Accreditation Council for People with Developmental Disabilities (ACDD) standards.

Essential Functions

  • Receives day to day guidance from the Chief Stationary Engineer performing skilled carpentry work in the construction, maintenance, repair, or alteration at the Chester Mental Health Center.
  • Performs cabinet work.
  • Works in the carpenter shop.
  • Exercises appropriate safety precautions in the use and handling of tools and equipment, paying particular attention to these procedures when working on residential and programming/training areas.
  • Adheres to applicable Public Health, Public Aid, Health Care Financing Administration (HCFA), and Accreditation Council for People with Developmental Disabilities (ACDD) standards.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires knowledge, skills, and mental development equivalent to completion of four years of high school. 
  • Requires completion of an approved apprenticeship program to qualify as a journey level carpenter.

Conditions of Employment

  • Requires ability to lift 75lbs independently (up to 100lbs with assistance).
  • Requires ability to climb ladders, stairs, and roofs to access all locations at the facility.
  • Requires the ability to utilize office equipment, including personal computers.
  • Requires ability to pass the IDHS background check.
  • Requires ability to pass a drug screen for drugs prohibited from recreational use under Illinois Law.
