Job Description

Specific to Upper Math Instructor: The Upper Math Instructor needs to be credentialed to teach dual enrollment classes, AP courses, and high-level mathematics, providing rigorous and engaging instruction that prepares students for college and beyond. This role emphasizes critical thinking, problem-solving, and academic excellence in advanced math subjects.

Position Summary:  

An SJNA faculty member is a significant leader at St. John’s Northwestern Academies (SJNA) and in the academic department. SJNA is a boarding school, so all faculty members  have unique opportunities not present in traditional day-school settings. An academic faculty member understands that their role is more than just a job but a rewarding vocation with the ability to impact student lives on a daily basis. The faculty member is responsible for delivering high-quality instruction to high school or middle school students, fostering an engaging and achievement-oriented learning environment. They will create structured lesson plans aligned with curriculum standards, set measurable goals, and assess progress to inform instruction and provide constructive feedback. This role requires effective classroom management, strong interpersonal and communication skills, and a commitment to building positive relationships with students and families. Faculty members also contribute to the school community by chaperoning events, leading extracurricular activities, and pursuing professional development to enhance teaching practices. A Bachelor’s degree is required, with teaching licensure or equivalent experience preferred.

Faculty Specific Requirements: 

  • Provide academic courses to high-school or middle school students as a subject matter expert with a strong grasp of content knowledge across the curriculum.
  • Engage students in scholarly pursuits in and outside the classroom.
  • Set and hold students to extremely high academic and behavior standards with effective and engaging classroom management skills.
  • Create engaging and structured lesson plans which align with curriculum standards. 
  • Set measurable, ambitious, and attainable goals for the year and each interim assessment cycle.
  • Design rigorous assessments which help guide instructional decisions and provide constructive feedback.
  • Maintain prompt and consistent gradebook practices to provide timely and consistent assessment and feedback progress to students and families. 
  • Develop a positive, achievement-oriented and structured learning environment so students can fulfill their potential.
  • Demonstrate professional behavior consistent with legal, ethical, and professional standards, contributes to the profession, and engages in professional growth that results in improved student learning.
  • Build rapport with students, parents, and families. 
  • Serve as a resource for students, staff, and parents regarding student developmental needs.
  • Seek continuous improvement in teaching skills by seeking out feedback and professional development opportunities.
  • Competent in educational technology, including but not limited to email, Google Suite for Education, online gradebook and SIS.
  • Communicate promptly, efficiently, and professionally in email and phone communication with families, students, and colleagues. 

Non-essential Duties: 

  • Chaperone student events and activities as assigned. 
  • Faculty members are required to lead extracurricular clubs or activities or sport.
  • Attend academy weekend events, i.e. Fall Families Weekend, Lessons and Carols, Spring Families Weekend, and Commencement Weekend. 

Required Education, Experience and Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree required. 
  • A valid teaching license in the appropriate area/level is preferred. If a candidate possesses a Master’s degree or higher or has significant work experience in the relevant field, exceptions are possible to be determined on a case-by-case basis.
  • Experience educating, supporting, and engaging students in a learning services environment. 
  • Strong interpersonal skills, organizational skills, and a desire to make a difference in a young person’s life. 
  • Ability to supervise students both in multiple academy settings in a safe, healthy, and controlled manner. 
  • Appreciation for the importance of building and maintaining positive relationships with students to facilitate a positive academic learning environment. 
  • Demonstrate integrity and strong moral character at all times. 
  • Must be able to work both independently and within a team.
