Minimum Qualifications
Minimum of an Associate's degree, or 60 hours of college credit, and four (4) years of sworn policing experience. Certification as a Law Enforcement Officer in accordance with the provisions of the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission or the ability to achieve certification within one year of employment.

License/Certification Required
Certification as a Law Enforcement Officer in accordance with the provisions of the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.

Preferred Qualifications
3 years of investigative experience

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The Sergeant of the investigations unit is first-line supervisory police work. Employees occupying positions of this class are responsible for the direct leadership and supervision of law enforcement and support personnel in the area of assignment. This position is directly responsible for the effective coordination of the work of subordinate law enforcement personnel. Sergeants can be assigned to lead a patrol squad or other units within the department. Although the emphasis is on supervision, the Sergeant will also be involved in training new employees, maintaining records, preparing and reviewing reports, and other duties related to the functioning of the assigned unit. This level of supervision includes enforcing personnel policies and recommending personnel actions, in addition to evaluating the performance of subordinates.

Duties and Responsibilities include:
  • Protect lives and property
  • Initiate opportunities for positive engagement with students, faculty, staff, and visitors
  • Coordinate activities by scheduling work assignments, setting priorities, and directing the work of subordinate employees.
  • Conduct shift/squad briefings
  • Evaluate and verify employee performance through the review of completed work assignments and investigative techniques and processes
  • Conduct performance reviews
  • Apprehend and arrest offenders
  • Identify staff development and training needs and ensure that training is obtained
  • Conduct, monitor, assign, and coordinate criminal investigations
  • Write reports and prepare criminal case paperwork
  • Establish, preserve, and protect crime scenes
  • Collect and preserve evidence
  • Interview victims, witnesses, and suspects
  • Utilize the principles of procedural justice
  • Lead and coordinate the crime scene team in conjunction with members and representatives of other enforcement agencies
  • Conduct lawful searches of people and property
  • Suggest courses of action to be pursued in investigations and prosecutions
  • Establish effective working relationships and rapport with people from various racial, ethnic and cultural backgrounds
  • Engage with others in a fair, respectful, and courteous manner, regardless of cultural differences.
  • Engage effectively with persons in various emotional and mental states
  • Accurately assess situations and determine an appropriate course of action
  • Confront a variety of problems and situations and determine appropriate solutions

Work Schedule/Hours: Mon - Fri, 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. Weekend, holiday, and on-call work may be required. Assignments and hours may vary depending on the needs of the organization.
Suggested Salary Range: $78,317 to 86,344 (Depending on education level, experience, and assignment)
