The UM Police Department has an exciting opportunity for a full-time Police Officer to work at the Coral Gables Campus. The University of Miami Police Department (UMPD) is dedicated to providing a safe and secure environment for all members of the University community who study, research, work, and live on the Coral Gables Campus. A police officer has the primary responsibility to provide Protection of life and property to all citizens on a 24-hour basis. Essential Duties include serving as a uniformed patrol officer, detective, community police officer, directed patrol officer, canine officer, or problem solving team officer. Responsibilities include responding to emergency calls, preserving public peace, enforcing state laws and county ordinances, facilitating traffic flow, completing incident reports, conducting investigations, filing charges, testifying in court, arresting violators, administering first aid, patrolling assigned areas, acting as police dispatcher when needed, assisting visitors and employees, coordinating motorist assistance, performing administrative tasks, providing escorts, and working special duty during university events. Knowledge required includes modern police methods, geography of Coral Gables and University campus, laws and ordinances, Clery Act, Title 9, and computer aptitude. Skills include use of firearms, communication, critical thinking, public speaking, and computer skills. Abilities include establishing effective relationships, working shifts in a 24/7 environment, reacting to emergencies, preparing reports, administering first aid, operating office equipment, physical strength, analyzing situations, detecting criminal activity, mediating disputes, and effective communication. Supervision given to student staff and contract security personnel; reports to shift commander or command officer. Qualifications include valid Florida Driver’s License, FDLE certification, 54 college credits or 3 years military/law enforcement experience, U.S. citizenship, passing background investigation, and no more than 5 moving traffic citations. The position offers a starting salary approximately $62,000 to $85,000 in year 1, a 4-day work week with rotating shifts, excellent benefits including tuition remission, retirement plan contributions, health insurance, parental leave, retention bonus, and more.
