Position Summary

An occupational health nurse (OHN) 2, will deliver health and safety programs and services to workers, worker populations and business units across the enterprise. Focus on the promotion and restoration of health, prevention of illness and injury, and protection from work-related and environmental hazards. Provide planning and oversight of complex projects, establishing collaborative and strong relationships with operational leaders and decision makers throughout the organization, practicing sound project management principles. The occupational health nurses’ responsibilities will include but not limited to case management, counseling and crisis intervention, health promotion and risk reduction, legal and regulatory compliance, and worker/workplace hazard detection. Occupational health nurses bring a combined knowledge of health expertise and business acumen to balance the requirement for a safe and healthful work environment with meeting the business needs of municipally owned company. 

Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Management of Occupational Illnesses and Injuries: triage and assessment of the required level of care, rendering the appropriate care, including the management of medical emergencies, as allowed under Standardized Procedure and the Nurse Practice Act.
  • Case Management: collaborate with the occupational health manager, the Medical Director, and HR staff for the assessment, planning, coordination and monitoring of quality and cost-effective options and services necessary to optimize the occupationally injured workers’ recovery and successful return to work.
  • Health Promotion: design programs that support positive lifestyle changes and individual efforts to lower risks of disease and injury. 
  • Legal and Regulatory Compliance: ensures compliance with regulations and laws affecting workers and the workplace. 
  • Workplace Hazard Detection: monitor, evaluate, and analyze workplace hazards by conducting research on the effects of workplace exposures; and gather and use health and hazard data to select and implement preventive and control measures.
  • Project Management: Assist with the design and documentation of health programs, including Standard Operating Procedures, injury prevention and treatment, medical surveillance, health promotion, and case management programs.
  • Serves as a clinical expert and consultant to all employees, business units, and other internal or external stakeholders. 
  • Execution of medical surveillance programs, which may include the assessment of questionnaires, the administration of vaccinations, physical examination, audiometry, spirometry and validation/interpretation of data.
  • Assists with a variety of safety programs, establishing collaborative and strong relationships with operational leaders and decision makers throughout the organization. 
  • Using sound project management principles, will assist with continuous improvement projects. 
  • Provides essential support services during localized or site-wide emergencies, including those that relate directly to the health, safety, and welfare of our workforce, ensuring continuity of operations.
  • Identify and lead process improvement projects in alignment with CPS Energy goals to generate measurable improvements.
  • Develop, coordinate, and/or instruct safety related training for employees, leadership, and other stakeholders as needed.
  • Maintains a system of confidential medical records in compliance with laws outlined in OSHA, HIPAA, and CPS Energy policies.
  • Maintains technical skills through independent research, training, certification, and conferences. 
  • Required to be on call duty rotation to provide 24x7 occupational health support to the enterprise, when needed. 
  • Performs other duties as assigned. 

     

Minimum Skills

Minimum Knowledge and Abilities

Registered Nurse License in Texas or a Compact State

Current CPR, AED, First Aid Certification

Well-developed written and verbal communication skills

Strong planning and analytical skills; ability to assess complex situations and make decisions

Proficient in Microsoft Office Package, including word processing, spreadsheets, database, presentation software, and electronic mail

History of “on-time” delivery of projects

Demonstrated ability to forge strong relationships across levels and organizational lines of business

Ability to work in a variety of locations such as the field, construction centers, and office settings

Ability to make recommendations and formulate independent decisions

Practices nursing ethically, competently, and within the legal scope of practice, ensuring compliance with all requirements of local, state, and federal laws; obtains and maintains necessary licenses and certifications required to practice

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree is preferred 
  • Case Management Experience or certification 
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills 
  • Ability to obtain a Certified Occupational Health Nurse or Certified Occupational Health Nurse-Specialist Certificate 
  • Knowledge of OSHA and/or OSHA 10-hour Training Completion

Minimum Education

Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing plus proficient experience in field

Required Certifications

Working Environment

Work is performed both indoors and outdoors, operating computer, manual dexterity, talking, hearing, and repetitive motion. Use of personal computing equipment, telephone, multi-functioning printer and calculator.

Ability to travel to and from meetings, training sessions or other business-related events. After hours work may be required.

Physical Demands

Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body.

Job requires frequent walking and standing, including in and around operations environment.
