Our direct client has an opening for an Electronic Healthcare Application Architect position # 746955. This position is for 12+ months, with option of extension, and will be worked remote – contractor may be required to be on-site in Raleigh, NC, as requested/needed. Description:

The Electronic Healthcare Application Architect is responsible for designing, documenting, and validating enterprise healthcare applications, with a strong focus on Electronic Health Records (EHR) and related systems. This role ensures system architecture aligns with industry standards, regulatory requirements, and organizational goals. The Application Architect collaborates with IT, clinical, and business teams to create comprehensive technical documentation, define integration strategies, and validate system functionalities.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Application Architecture & Design

  • Design scalable and secure architectures for healthcare applications, including EHR, clinical, and ancillary systems.
  • Develop best practices for application development, integration, and interoperability.
  • Ensure system architectures comply with HIPAA, HITECH, and other regulatory requirements .
  • Guide teams on system design, ensuring high availability, performance, and reliability.

2. Documentation & Validation

  • Develop and maintain comprehensive technical documentation for EHR applications, including workflows, integration points, and system configurations.
  • Create detailed functional and technical specifications for new and existing applications.
  • Validate system configurations against clinical and operational workflows to ensure optimal performance.
  • Work closely with QA teams to develop and execute application validation testing strategies .

3. System Integration & Interoperability

  • Define and document integration architecture between EHR and third-party applications.
  • Oversee FHIR, HL7, API-based interfaces , and data exchange strategies.
  • Ensure seamless interoperability between systems, including lab, imaging, pharmacy, and billing applications.

4. Compliance & Security

  • Collaborate with IT Security to enforce data protection, encryption, and access control policies .
  • Ensure compliance with ONC Health IT Certification, CMS, and Joint Commission standards .
  • Document and validate security measures to safeguard patient health information (PHI).

5. Collaboration & Communication

  • Work closely with clinical, operational, and IT stakeholders to align application architectures with business needs.
  • Provide technical leadership to developers, analysts, and support teams.
  • Train and mentor IT staff on application architecture principles and documentation best practices.

Qualifications & Experience:

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Healthcare Informatics, or related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in healthcare IT application architecture, EHR systems, or enterprise healthcare applications.
  • Proficiency in application documentation methodologies, technical writing, and validation processes .
  • Experience with HL7, FHIR, APIs, and healthcare system integrations .
  • Knowledge of HIPAA, HITECH, and HITRUST security frameworks .
  • Ability to create detailed technical diagrams, flowcharts, and architecture blueprints .

Preferred:

  • Epic Certification in Security, Bridges, or Integration .
  • Strong experience in EHR platforms (Epic, Cerner, Meditech, or similar) .
  • Experience with ServiceNow, ITSM processes, and change management .
  • Familiarity with cloud-based healthcare architectures (Azure, AWS, or Google Cloud Healthcare APIs) .

Competencies & Skills:

Excellent technical writing and documentation abilities
Ability to translate business requirements into system architecture

 

Required/Desired Skills: 

  • Epic Client Systems Administrator (ECSA) experience - Required - 5 Years
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Healthcare Informatics, or related field. - Required - 4 Years
  • Proficiency in application documentation methodologies, technical writing, and validation processes. - Required - 5 Years
  • Experience in healthcare IT application architecture, EHR systems, or enterprise healthcare applications - Required - 5 Years
  • Experience with HL7, FHIR, APIs, and healthcare system integrations. - Required - 5 Years
  • Knowledge of HIPAA, HITECH, and HITRUST security frameworks. - Required - 7 Years
  • Ability to create detailed technical diagrams, flowcharts, and architecture blueprints. - Required - 5 Years
