Job Description

Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart, a member of the international Network of Sacred Heart Schools, is a Catholic, independent college preparatory school for girls, Grades 1-12, with a co-educational Early Childhood Program, Pre-Kindergarten, and Kindergarten in Bethesda, Maryland. The Lower School Reading Specialist is responsible for supporting our elementary learners in developing strong foundational literacy skills. The Reading Specialist will collaborate with students, teachers, and families to provide a seamless, data-driven approach to reading instruction and intervention. 

The Reading Specialist will: 

• use research-based methodologies to provide targeted, systematic, and explicit reading instruction to emergent readers.
• support students at Tier 1, Tier 2, and Tier 3 levels through individualized and small-group instruction.
• collaborate with classroom teachers to review student progress, adjust instruction, and plan for differentiated literacy support.
• assist teachers in developing small-group instruction that aligns with best practices in early literacy.
• regularly communicate with families, providing updates on student progress, home support strategies, and literacy development guidance.
• utilize diagnostic assessments and ongoing progress monitoring to inform instruction and intervention planning.
• contribute to a school-wide literacy culture by supporting best practices and ensuring classroom consistency.
• work with all Lower School faculty members, as necessary, and the Student Support Team to ensure appropriate accommodations and interventions for struggling readers. 

Essential Skills and Experience: 

• Master’s Degree in Special Education or Reading
• Experience with Microsoft Word & Excel 
• Certification in an evidence-based, multi-sensory reading program
• Excellent communication skills
• Experience working with emergent readers in Grades K-2.
• Strong understanding of early literacy development, phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.
• Ability to analyze assessment data to drive instruction.
• Passion for fostering a love of reading and building confidence in young learners.

The desired candidate has experience teaching and/or guiding student support in a Lower School setting. Compensation includes salary commensurate with experience. This position would be compensated based on our salary scale, with the salary range for this position likely falling somewhere between $60,000 and $90,000+, depending on years of experience and level of education.
