PRIMARY POSITION FUNCTION/SUMMARY:

This dual-role position supports the Illinois Fire Service Institute's (IFSI) mission by serving both as an International Outreach Services Librarian and a Library Services Librarian. The individual in this position will play a vital role in coordinating international education and exchange initiatives, including visiting scholar and training programs, while also supporting the curation, management, and development of IFSI's archival and library services.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

International Outreach Services Librarian

The International Outreach Services Librarian is responsible for assisting with visiting scholars and training programs in library science, fire emergency management, and related fields within IFSI’s International Programs. This includes maintaining clear and consistent communication with the Director of International Programs and serving as the primary point of contact for assigned program activities.

• Coordinate the delivery of on- and off-campus programs.
• Acquire materials needed for program delivery.
• Prepare supporting documents for visa applications (in collaboration with UIUC ISSS and related offices).
• Arrange classes, workshops, and bilingual materials as needed.
• Develop audio-visual and presentation materials.
• Schedule speakers and facilitators.
• Prepare activity sites and collect, analyze, and report on pre- and post-program feedback.
• Assist with planning and delivery of programs including Chinese Librarians Scholarly Exchange Program (CLSEP), Visiting Scholar Program, IFSI training programs in China/at IFSI, delegation visits, and other international programs.
• Ensure programs meet established objectives and goals.
• Support the development of research projects and presentations related to international librarianship.
• Responsible for all aspects of CLSEP and Visiting Scholars Program, including:
  • Identify, recruit, and contact participants, speakers, and facilitators.
  • Contribute to the development of vision and goals for IFSI International Programs.
  • Create new program content.
  • Stay current on trends in library and information science.
  • Ensure prompt response to correspondence and maintain program records, schedules, travel documentation, and related materials.
  • Serve on IFSI, university, state, or national committees as needed.

Library Services Librarian

The Library Services Librarian supports data curation and digital collection development within the IFSI Library, with a focus on archival collections under the supervision of the IFSI Archivist. The role includes general archival and reference service tasks.

• Collaborate with the Archivist to manage and curate digital collections such as the Fire College Digital Collection and IFLODD.
• Develop new digital services and assist with data collection and report writing.
• Support partnership development with UIUC Main Library, Illinois State Library’s Illinois Digital Archives, and other related partners.
• Conduct general archival tasks, including assessment, deaccessioning, digitization, and research.
• Prepare project-related reports.
• Staff the IFSI Library reference desk, including circulating materials, answering basic questions, and forwarding inquiries.
• Assist with library data management, curation, and reporting.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:

• Bachelor’s degree in library and information science.
• A total of one (1) year (12 months) in education, training and/or work experience in Library and Information Science (LIS).
  (Note: Master’s Degree in an area consistent with the duties of the position may be substituted for one (1) year of work experience.)
• Demonstrated experience in program management, research, and/or collaboration.
• Fluent bilingual Chinese oral and written skills.

Preferred:

• Master’s degree in library and information science.
• Experience in a multicultural work setting and knowledge of visa/travel requirements.
• Familiarity with IFSI Library and its programs.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

• Ability to begin work quickly with minimal onboarding.
• Strong organizational skills.
• Positive attitude and demonstrated ability to work successfully with a variety of people and departments.

Appointment Information

This is a 100% full-time Civil Service Program Coordinator position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after May 19, 2025. The salary range for this position is $40,000-50,000.
