POSITION SUMMARY
We are seeking a motivated J unior Network Security Engineer to assist in building, securing, and maintaining our hybrid network infrastructure across on-premises datacenters and Microsoft Azure. This role is ideal for someone with a solid networking foundation who is eager to deepen their expertise in firewalls, VPNs, and cloud networking while learning to operate within regulated environments such as HITRUST, HIPAA, and NIST. You will work closely with senior engineers to gain hands-on experience in secure network design, troubleshooting, and documentation. This is a hybrid role based in the San Luis Obispo area (minimum 3 days a week work in-office).

Key Responsibilities

• Assist in configuring, monitoring, and maintaining network devices including firewalls, switches, and wireless systems under senior engineer guidance.
• Support the setup and troubleshooting of VPN connections (site-to-site and client-based), Azure VPN Gateway, and SD-WAN solutions.
• Perform basic routing, VLAN configuration, and DNS/DHCP management tasks.
• Assist in monitoring network performance and responding to alerts from security monitoring tools (Microsoft Sentinel, Arctic Wolf, AWS Security Hub).
• Learn and apply Zero Trust principles, encryption standards, and secure access control practices.
• Help document network changes, project steps, and troubleshooting procedures to maintain accurate records for compliance and team knowledge sharing.
• Participate in network security and compliance initiatives, supporting senior engineers in HITRUST, HIPAA, and NIST-aligned projects.
• Provide Tier 1–2 support for network-related incidents, escalating complex issues as needed.
• Stay current with networking and security trends, certifications, and best practices.

Preferred Qualifications

• Foundational knowledge of networking concepts (TCP/IP, VLANs, DNS, routing basics).
• Exposure to firewall configuration, VPN setup, or network troubleshooting (SonicWall, pfSense, Palo Alto preferred but not required).
• Familiarity with cloud networking concepts, preferably in Microsoft Azure.
• Understanding of security fundamentals (encryption, authentication, least privilege) and eagerness to learn compliance requirements (HITRUST, HIPAA, NIST).
• Hands-on experience from coursework, labs, internships, or entry-level IT/networking positions.
• Strong documentation habits and ability to communicate clearly with technical teams.
